BOI to establish Special Economic Zone in Puttalam
COLOMBO: Work is currently under way to set up a Special
Economic Zone (SEZ) in Puttalam. Recently, Minister of Investment
Promotion Navin Dissanayake and officers from the BOI met with
representatives from the relevant departments and State institutions in
the fields of surveying, electricity and power supply, water supply,
road construction/development and urban development to discuss about the
flow of the project.

During the meeting important matters such as project’s
progress-to-date and ways to expedite the process were discussed in
detail. A 340 acres plot of land, located along the
Anuradhapura-Kurunegala Road has already been selected for the proposed
SEZ. The first phase of the project will develop an extent of 225 acres
and 115.
Minister Dissanayake stressed the importance of commencing the
project as soon as possible and requested all relevant authorities will
give their fullest support to the BOI in order to make this project a
success.
He also added that this project will be of great benefit to the local
community.
The Puttalam SEZ will facilitate non-water-consuming industries.
Athula Jayasinghe - Senior Manager, Technical Services Department of the
BOI made a comprehensive presentation and explained about the various
features of the project. He added that the first phase of the project is
estimated to cost approximately Rs. 50 million.
L.D. Dickman - Deputy Director General (Infrastructure) and Ms.
Sherine Perera - Director (Environment) of the BOI were also present at
the meeting. |
