Govt. hands over No Faith Motion against UNP MP
COLOMBO: The Government yesterday handed over a No Confidence
Motion against Badulla district UNP Parliamentarian Lakshman Seneviratne.
Chief Government Whip and Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle and several
other Ministers handed over the No Confidence Motion to Speaker W. J. M.
Lokubandara. It is signed by 78 Government MPs.
The No Confidence Motion states that Seneviratne at the Emergency
debate on June 6, 2007 has made certain statements which cast aspersions
on several officials of the three Armed Forces and Police.
The MP has levelled baseless allegations against the Defence
Secretary, a DIG, a former Air Force Officer, a brother of a Government
Minister and a Deputy Solicitor General by mentioning their names.
The false statement by the MP to gain narrow political advantage
tantamounts to a betrayal of the Nation, the three Armed Forces and
country's security.
The MP has made this baseless allegation by taking cover under
Parliament privileges.
"Although the MP said he will take full responsibility for his
statement, he has failed to provide details to back such a statement to
allow the Government to conduct a formal investigation into the
allegations. Therefore, the MP has betrayed the Nation twice."
The No Confidence Motion states that due to these activities of the
MP, the officers of the three Armed Forces and Police have already
become key LTTE targets while the lives of their family members are also
threatened. The statement by the MP has brought down the morale of the
officers of three Armed Forces and Police.
The MP has made this false statement to tarnish the image of the
country and to provoke India.
"As a whole, the irresponsible behaviour of the MP has caused a
serious threat to the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity and
national security." |
