Present status and future challenges of paddy cultivation in Sri

The total paddy production of Sri Lanka in 2005
was 3,246 thousand metric tons and it fulfils 96 per cent of the
consumer requirements. As shown in statistics paddy production of
Sri Lanka has increased steadily in the past 25 years, in view of
the increasing cropping intensity and technological improvements in
cultivation methods resulting in an observed in the average yield.

It is a well accepted fact that the defeat of
the LTTE in the Eastern theatre is an irreparable loss to the Tiger
outfit. Whatever definition is given to LTTE's defeat in the East,
whether it was by the LTTE or by any other interested parties who
try to downplay the achievements of the Security Forces, the Tiger
outfit is now facing the direct consequences of their defeat in the
East.
