Saints Quadrangular on Saturday and Sunday

QUADRANGULAR: The 40th annual Saints quadrangular cricket and basketball tournaments hosted by St. Joseph’s College will be worked off on Saturday and Sunday at Darley Road, Bambalapitiya and Kotahena.

In the main 50 overs a side quadrangular tournament semifinals St. Joseph’s College will take on St. Peter’s College at Darley Road on Saturday while St. Benedict’s College will meet St. Anthony’s College at Kotahena on the same day.

This tournament has produced some exciting matches in the past and in the series tally Old Bens, Old Joes and Old Peterites are level with eleven victories to their credit while Old Antonians have clinched the title on nine occasions.

This event was inaugurated in 1963 by Old Bens Sports Club and since then it has been conducted annually except for the years 1970, 1978 and 1989. Old Antonians won the inaugural title under the captaincy of the late Harry Jayasundera.

The veterans over 40 tournament was inaugurated in 2002 with the Old Peterites captained by Roy Dias emerging victorious.

But since then Old Bens have dominated the veterans tournament and they are currently ahead in the series with a total of three victories. The Old Antonians have just a solitary victory to their credit.

In the veterans over 40 tournament semifinals St. Joseph’s College will confront St. Peter’s College and St. Benedict’s College will be up against St. Anthony’s College both matches on Saturday at Bambalapitiya.

In the basketball tournament semifinals St. Benedict’s College will clash with St. Anthony’s College and St. Joseph’s College will confront St. Peter’s College on Sunday at Darley Road with the final schedule on the same day.

Wijeratne, Shehan Wijetunga, Mahesh Perera, Nirmal de Silva, Sundeep Perera and Sherbee Vangear.

St. Benedict’s (from): Rally Tissera (captain), Jeromy Savarymuthapulle , Sagara Perera, Pradeep Dassanayake, Trevor Cramer, Pradeep Hewage, Lahiru Jayampathi, Joel Saverymuthapulle, Surendra Illangage, Angelo Anandappa, Mahesh Perera, Dinesh Nissanka, Kasun Perera, Rajiv Ranaweera, Rerrin Silva, Chanaka Devabandu, Chaminda Hathurusinghe, Tarindu Heshan, Sunesh Rodrigo.

St. Anthony’s (from): Ruwan Kalpage (captain), Daminda Kolugala, Tyronne de Silva, Prasad Ranawaka, Dilshan Vitharana, Nuwan Ratnayake, Indika Fernando, Champika Siriwardena, Chinthaka Girihagama, Zamique Muthalib, Sameera Weerabahu, Sahan Pinaduwa, Mohammed Hazari, Manjula Chithrasena, Patrick Mahimadasa and Premoth Fernando.
