21 Tigers killed in A'pura airbase attack

Several aircraft damaged, 13 Forces personnel killed:

Air Force troops backed by the Army Special Forces killed 21 Tiger cadres who launched a pre-dawn ground attack coupled with an air raid destroying a number of Air Force aircraft and killing at least 13 Security Forces personnel at the Anuradhapura Air Force Base.

Govt undeterred, Northern thrust to continue

In the aftermath of the LTTE attack on the Anuradhapura air base, the Government yesterday emphasised that it is not deterred by the terror acts and will continue the thrust on LTTE strongholds in the Wanni in its bid to liberate the Northern people.

Sri Lanka received US$ 3.4 billion from expats

Sri Lanka has received $3.4 billion from its expatriate community in 2006, says a fresh UN report released in New York. Afghanistan, emerging from the shadow of the nearly three-decades of civil war, recorded a close US$ 3.3 billion. This is for the first time that any study has come out with a figure of remittances being received by the country.

Growth in private remittances

Private remittances grew by 17.0 per cent to US dollars 1,758 million during the first eight months of 2007, containing the current account deficit. The overall balance of payments registered a surplus of US dollars 81 million and the gross official reserves stood at US dollars 2,610 million (3.0 months of imports) by end August 2007.
