Regulations on jewellery standards
With the objectives of promoting and upgrading the jewellery industry
and in protecting the consumer interest a programme has been implemented
by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority where the trade is
encouraged to market jewellery articles which conform to legal
standards.

National Gem and Jewellery Authority Chairman, Hasitha Tillekeratne
said those engaged in the jewellery industry are required to register
with the National Gem and Jewellery Authority under the National Gem and
Jewellery Act No.50 of 1993. The required regulations to ensure a
jewellery market which conform to approved legal standards, have now
been implemented.
The assaying and hall-marking is done at the Assay office (Precious
metal testing laboratory) of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority
which is equipped with ultra-modern facilities to undertake assaying/
hall-marking to certify standards of gold, silver and platinum jewellery. |
