When the country marks the third year of the tsunami the Government has been able to reconstruct 80 per cent of schools damaged as the result of tsunami said Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha. Under this project the Government has allocated Rs. 10,659.28 million.

There were 183 partly or fully damaged schools according to the School Development Progress Report released on December 15. Accordingly, 101 schools have already been fully reconstructed while another 41 schools are being renovated at present. However there are 37 schools which are still to be reconstructed.

"The Government has to wait until we get the approval of the Security Forces since these schools are in the North and East. No sooner the greenlight is given the Government would commence the reconstruction process" the Minister said.
