Pakistani Opposition Leader Benazir Bhutto was
assassinated yesterday in a gun and bomb attack as she left an
election rally in the city of Rawalpindi. State media and her party
confirmed her death. “She has been martyred,” said party official
Rehman Malik.

The call for a General election at this moment
is totally unfair and unwarranted, President Mahinda Rajapaksa
asserted yesterday. “I see no reason why we should dissolve
Parliament when the Government is committed to development and
