Veteran Photographer L.E. Samararatne presented his book titled ‘Learn to See’ to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat recently. The publication had been a sixty-year collection of ‘black and white’ photographic art by L.E. Samararatne. The publication has been financed by the President’s Fund. Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga was also present.


 




Rs. 25m for solar lanterns to 1,600 families

Under the Gami Eliya programme the North Central Provincial Council provides solar powered lanterns to the peasant families living in distant, difficult villages who lack infrastructural facilities such as electricity and water.

The Ceylon Electricity Board has been able to provide only 65 percent of the people in Anuradhapura district electricity facilities.

The Provincial Council has allocated Rs. 25 million for providing lanterns to 1,600 families in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts, for residents of Dimbulagala, Welikanda, Welioya, Padaviya, Kebithigollewa and Galenbindunawewa.


Wayamba ISB to set up industrial project in South

Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wiyayalal de Silva accompanied by a group of officials visited the Wayamba Industrial Service Bureau on December 17.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss measures to set up an industrial project in the Southern Province in collaboration with the Wayamba Provincial Council to upgrade the living standards of the rural poor through income generating projects.

The aim of their programme is to upgrade the living standard of the rural poor.

The Wayamba Industrial Service Bureau has decided to start several other development programmes in six districts of Sri Lanka.

They are Badulla, Hambantota, Kalutara, Matale, Kurunegala and Anuradhapura.

Wayamba ISB was the only regional organisation invited to participate in this visit and was represented by its Director Neelakanth Wanninayake.
