Govt. condemns Maheswaran killing

The Government denounces without reservation the wanton act of violence that took the life of UNP Parliamentarian T. Maheswaran.

Maheswaran opted to take the democratic path to voice the grievances and the aspirations of the Tamil community in Sri Lanka and earned the respect of not only the community he belonged to but all Sri Lankans who cherish the democratic way of resolving issues.

Although he was in the parliamentary opposition, Maheswaran played an important role in supporting the Government’s efforts to bring relief and assistance to the people in the Jaffna Peninsula who have suffered long a multitude of depravations thanks to the intransigence of the LTTE and its insistence on besieging the very people it purports to represent.

The Government offers its sincere condolences to Mrs. Maheswaran and the rest of his family in this moment of tragedy and pledges to spare no pains until the perpetrators of this dastardly and cowardly act are brought to book.
