Allocations for Kamburupitiya's projects

Financial allocations amounting to Rs. 3 million has been provided for the Kamburupitiya Divisional Secretariat to implement income generating projects for livelihood development of Samurdhi recipients.

Arrangements have been made under the livelihood development programme to methodically develop smallholder tea and cinnamon land plants belonging to Samurdhi recipients which have not been properly cultivated or neglected.

Steps have also been taken to provide planting material to 70 Samurdhi recipients who own smallholder tea or cinnamon cultivations.


SLAAS General President induction

The ceremonial induction of the General President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) Prof. H.D. Gunawardhana will take place on January 11 at 5.00 p.m. at the SLAAS Auditorium, 120/10, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7. Science and Technology Minister Professor Tissa Vitarana will be the chief guest while the Guest of Honour will be Dr. R.O.B. Wijesekera.


The Pearl Fishers at BMICH

French composer Georges Bizet's The Pearl Fishers will go on boards at the BMICH on January 9 and 11.

It is in Ceylon, exotic and mysterious to the Western eye, that French composer Bizet placed his dramatic story.

The composer's versatility can be measured from the far a way setting he chose when composing more than 140 years ago, in mid-19th century, a story depicting love, jealousy, conflict and finally redemption.

This production is a result of an Indo- French collaboration and boasts an international cast.


Parents seek help to find missing Pakistani

Azhar Ashraf Ashraf Ali Khuhawar, 27, holder of Pakistani Passport No. AB1841621 arrived in Sri Lanka from Pakistan on December 7, 2006 by SriLankan flight UL-144. He stayed at Imperial Hotel, Room No. 407, Duplication Road, Colombo 4 from December 7 to 12, 2006 and then shifted to the YMCA and stayed at Room No. A 06 upto December 15, 2006. He was using the Mobile number 94724922001 until March 2007. Since then his whereabouts are not known.

His family has appealed for help to trace Azhar Ashraf.

Help save his life

Sadique Ali, 22 of 50/1, Sri Niwasa Mawatha, Beruwala is suffering from severe renal failure. The consultant physician Prof. Sellahewa has advised him to undergo renal transplantation at the earliest. Estimated cost is Rs. 700,000 and Rs. 300,000 for post operative care.

As his father is a labourer in the Ports Authority he is unable to meet the huge amount to save his son’s life. They request from generous public for financial assistance and also to donate a ‘B’ positive blood group kidney to save his life.

Fertiliser production facility

An organic fertiliser production facility along with a large scale poultry farm is to be set-up in the Southern Province at a cost of Rs.60 million under the Nipayum Sri Lanka-300 programme.

The project proposed by Vern Abner (Pvt) Ltd has been approved by BOI and is expected to commence work from March.

The initiative is to target the local market exclusively considering the high demand for both products in the domestic market.

The two parties recently signed agreements with Directors Channa Palansuriya and Eshan de Silva representing BOI and Managing Director Evon De Soyza representing Vern Abner.


Remembering Saddam, Benazir

The first death anniversary of former Iraq President Saddam Hussain will be commemorated at the Home for the Physically Handicapped Children today at 11.00 a.m. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto will also be remembered on this occasion. Khatham-ul-Quran will be recited together with other Islamic observances. Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana Presidential Advisor A. H. M. Azwer and Al-Haj Mohamed Haleel will address the gathering. President of the Home Jiffrey Haniffa will preside.
