Sri Lanka U-19 beat England

Keep final hopes alive:

The Sri Lanka under 19 team bounced back into recognition with a fine all round performance as they trounced the England under 19 by 158 runs in their Tri Series limited overs cricket match worked off at the SSC ground in Maitland Place yesterday.

The Lankans rattled up a huge 312 for 7 from their 50 overs after electing to bat first and then skittled out their opponents for just 154 runs from 35 overs.

This was no doubt a tremendous improvement by the Sri Lanka under 19 team following their crushing nine wicket defeat at the hands of their Pakistan counterparts on Sunday. Their success have also kept their hopes alive of qualifying into the final with two victories from four outings.

Sri Lanka’s second straight win against England was fashioned by a brilliant unbeaten century from their vice captain Dinesh Chandimal and all rounder Sachith Pathirana. The former hit an unbeaten 112 from 132 deliveries with the help of one six and ten boundaries.

The elegant wicket keeper batsman held the Sri Lankan batting together after they had lost two early wickets and added a superb 132 runs for the third wicket along with Kusal Janitha Perera.

This partnership set the pace for a good total with Perera stroking a fluent 55 from 73 deliveries with eight boundaries.

Chandimal was associated in another 84 run stand for the sixth wicket from just seven overs together with all rounder Sachith Pathirana who hit a 30 ball 55 inclusive of two sixes and eight boundaries.

Pathirana also had a good game with the ball claiming three wickets as England under 19 were shot out for a modest 154 runs in 35 overs.

They never looked lime making a match of it from the moment they lost a wicket in the very first over of the innings and were completely out of the contest by the 20th over as they slumped to 85 for 5.

However the last pair of the England under 19 team Harris and Woakes delayed Sri Lanka’s victory march with a stubborn stand of 46 runs from ten overs.
