Pope Benedict XVI shakes hands with Kosovo ‘s President Fatmir Sedju in his private studio at the Vatican. The Pontiff meeting with Sedju marked an opportunity for the Holy Father “to express his closeness to the entire population of that land, where Christianity has been present since the first centuries of our era”. which the Holy See stressed did not necessarily represent its approval for Kosovo’s attempts to win independence from Serbia.

China criticises Taiwan over UN referendum

China warned Saturday that Taiwan’s decision to hold a referendum on its bid for UN membership could threaten peace in the Asia-Pacific region, state media said. Taiwan announced on Friday it would hold two referendum on bidding to join the world body at the same time as presidential elections next month.

Japan to invite Asian nations to G8 summit

Japan is considering inviting Asian countries, including China and ASEAN states, to this year’s G8 summit, a newspaper reported Sunday. Japan will host the summit in Toyako, a lakeside resort on the northern island of Hokkaido, from July 7 to 9.

Pakistani, Indian ministers to visit Iran over pipeline
