AWD Group in convincing win

It was smooth sailing for AWD Group as they chalked out a convincing five goals to nil triumph over Airport and Aviation Services in the ongoing Mercantile League Hockey Tournament `C' division fixture organised by the Mercantile Hockey Association of Sri Lanka and played at Malay grounds, Colombo.

The winners were well ahead with three goals to nil at half time. S. Dilshan and Vipula Dahanayake who scored the first goal of the match netted two goals each for AWD while K. Rupasinghe scored another goal to make the tally 5-0.

The `B' division first round match played between HSBC and Browns Group ended in a two all draw worked off at Oval grounds.

HSBC after trailing one goal to nil at breather made a good comeback in the second half of the match with Mahesh Sinnathamby and M.N. Shakthi scoring one goal apiece. M.A. Chaturanga was the lone warrior for Browns Group where he scored two goals.

In an early match Commercial Bank beat Sampath Bank by three goals to one after being deadlocked one all at short whistle played at Astro Turf, Reid Avenue, Colombo. The first goal of the match came from Sampath Bank's Anuruddha Wickramasinghe when converted a penalty corner as early as in the fifth minute.

Then it was a fine back hand shot by Milan Ariyawansa which equalled the score 1-1. The other two goals for Commercial Bank came from Anju Hewage through two penalty corners in the second half which turned the match in favour of them. Hewage was the best player last year.

Today Seylan Bank will take on Commercial Bank in an `A' division match at Astro Turf, Reid Avenue while Hatton National Bank will confront Singer in another `A' division match tomorrow at the same venue.
