EU assistance to promote footwear and leather products
A special discussion was held at the Export Development Board (EDB)
between Minister of Export Development and International Trade, Prof.
G.L. Peiris and Ambassador for the European Union (EU) in Sri Lanka
Julian Wilson, that centred on the promotion of the Footwear and Leather
products industry in Sri Lanka and efforts to get EU assistance to
promote such products in the international market.
At this meeting attended by senior officials of the EDB, members of
the Sri Lanka Footwear Association and senior members of the leading
footwear and leather products manufacturers, the Minister explained to
Wilson, the present status of the industry and the identified areas for
expansion.
Industrialists present requested Wilson to consider funding an
integrated programme consisting of products, designing and marketing
segments in addition to providing tariff concessions.
Wilson said such assistance could be provided under the new EU
Programme on Aid and requested that such proposals be forwarded for
consideration. It was also decided to hold another discussion at the EU
Office.
