Lanka launch campaign with smashing win
Chris Dhambarage reporting
Sri Lanka launched their campaign for the International Cricket
Council (ICC) under 19 World Cup with a smashing 61 run victory over the
giant killers Nepal in their Group C opening fixture worked off at the
Penang Sports Club grounds in Malaysia yesterday.
After scoring a healthy 236 for 9 having elected to bat first Sri
Lanka then bundled out their opponents for just 175 runs in the 49th
over with Sachith Pathirana producing a fine all round performance that
helped him to win the man of the match award.
Even then Sri Lanka's success was in the balance at one stage after
the Nepal openers Chhetri and Mandal set about their task in style with
a dangerous stand of 61 runs from 15 overs. The pair negotiated the Sri
Lankan pace atack quite successfully and looked like taking their side
towards an upset victory.
However with the introduction of the spinners the run rate slowed
down and the Lankans took the opportunity to pick up a couple of quick
wickets at this stage. In fact Sachith Pathirana broke the opening
partnership and went on to add two more wickets to his tally to finsih
with the outstanding figures of three wickets for 31 from his ten overs.
The Lankans were able to add more pressure on the Nepal middle order
as they lost wickets at regular intervals in their atempt to accelerate
the scoring rate. Umesh Karunaratne, Navin Kavikara and Angelo Perera
all rose to the occasion by capturing two wickets each as Nepal lost
their last five wickets for the addition of just 44 runs.
Earlier Sri Lanka recovered from a disappointing start to post a
competitive total of 236 runs after electing to bat first. They slumped
to 37 for 3 by the tenth over of the innings following an inspired
opening spell of bowling from Bhattarai who went on to claim a four
wicket haul.
However Sri Lanka's middle order picked up their form and managed to
reach a total of more than two hundred runs thanks to superb
contributions from skipper Ashan Subasinghe and Sachith Pathirana.
Subasinghe played a true captains innings of 46 runs from 83 balls
with the help of five boundaries and added 72 valuable runs for the
fifth wicket along with Sachith Pathirana who went on to hit a run a
ball 62 inclusive of seven boundaries.
In addition the Sri Lankan innings received a tremendous boost during
the last few overs with all rounder Thisara Perera smashing a quick fire
41 from 27 deliveries with two sixes and two boundaries.
Thisara Perera and Chatura Peiris launched a severe attack on the
Nepal bowling while adding a crucial 40 runs for the ninth wicket from
just six overs.
