Lankans stay unbeaten
Beat Namibia by 163 runs:
Chris DHAMBARAGE reporting
Sri Lanka set up a massive showdown with former two time champions
Australia by outplaying Namibia by 163 runs in their International
Cricket Council (ICC) Under 19 Youth World Cup Group C fixture worked
off at the University grounds in Penang, Malaysia yesterday.
The Lankans rattled up a formidable 247 for 7 after electing to bat
first and then bundled out their opponents for a mere 84 runs to post
their second successive victory in this sixteen nation competition.
Sri Lanka also booked a place in the Super League tournament and will
take on the unbeaten Australian team on Friday to decide the group
champions.
Sri Lankan innings was built around three useful innings from opener
Lahiru Thirimanna, middle order batsman Kusal Janith Perera and Roshane
Silva. In fact Thirimanna played the sheet anchor role as he hit a top
score of 68 from 84 deliveries with the help of five boundaries.
The man of the match Thirimanna who was again promoted in the batting
order following the injury to Dilshan Munaweera, got his act together
well and put on 87 runs for the second wicket together with Kusal Janith
Perera.
The pair steadied the innings after the early dismissal of Dinesh
Chandimal and set the pace for a match winning total.
Sri Lanka suffered another middle order collapse as they seem to
panic while attempting to increase their scoring rate during the latter
stages of the innings. In fact they slumped to 159 for 5 by the 33rd
over mainly due to some pretty ordinary batting and shot selection.
However Roshane Silva batting at number seven hammered a run a ball
51 not out and helped his team to get closer to the 250 run mark.
Sri Lanka’s consultant coach Aravinda de Silva said that he expected
the team to score over three hundred runs considering the manner they
were progressing at the start of the innings.
The former Sri Lanka batsman however said that the wicket was a bit
slow and run making was somewhat difficult despite a fast outfield. In
fact Australia hammered over three hundred runs against Namibia at this
same venue.
Late order batsman Roshane Silva performed a fantastic effort while
taking most of the strike during the last few overs as he hit an
unbeaten half century inclusive of two sixes and one boundary.
The Lankans soon wrapped up the Namibia innings in just 32.4 overs
with Sachith Pathirana claiming a four wicket haul after Denuwan
Fernando had done the early damage.
Fernando picked up a wicket in his very first delivery before
Pathirana ran through the Namibia middle order with another penetrative
spell of bowling.
