Crucial meeting today:
Shirley Wijesinghe
Government sources yesterday dismissed speculation of a dissolution
of Colombo Municipal Council but did not rule out suspension of the
country's premier local body. These sources stressed that present
administration of CMC was not at a satisfactory level and a decision on
its fate was only inevitable.
Meanwhile, sources at the CMC revealed that a decisive meeting is to
be held today with the President based on the recommendations of the
committee appointed by Western Provincial Chief Minister Reginald Cooray
to probe the irregularities and malpractices at the CMC. The Committee
was headed by Retired Court of Appeal Judge Dr. Chandradasa Nanayakkara.
UPFA Councillors the "Spectacle Group" the Chief Minister and Western
Provincial Governor will participate at the discussion, the sources
added. Ratepayer Businessman M. de Silva told the Daily News there had
been no action forthcoming even though six months had elapsed since the
handing over of the Committee report which focused on the irregularities
and malpractices at the CMC.
