Mag invests Rs. 600 mn for technical college

Expanding business to education sector Mag Consolidate Pvt Limited invests over Rs 600, million on a technical college.

Speaking to Daily News Business, Assistant General Manager of Mag City a subsidiary of Mag Consolidate, Jagath Parakrama said that company had projected to commence operations at the end of this year. There was a need for setting up technical colleges for school leavers who are not qualified for University entrance in Sri Lanka.

The new technical college will conduct courses on automobile repairing, civil engineering, electrical engineering, telecommunication, architecture, TV presenting and beauty culture.

In the local education sector there is a huge demand for such of training courses and the foreign job market demands for high skilled workers.

Today most of the local universities do not provide graduates to cater to the needs of various industries. It is important establishing technical colleges for producing skilled staff for local and international job markets, Parakrama said.

We will tie up with Australian and New Zealand universities and other educational institutes to bring high standard technical courses to Sri Lanka. All these courses will be designed to meet the requirements of international labour market. At the end of the course students will also enable to get training abroad too, he said.

The proposed technical college will be equipped with latest technologies and other training facilities. Company expects to have both foreign and local qualified lecturers to man the lecture panel. Company also plans to introduce international degree courses to Sri Lanka in the near future.

At the initial stage the college will conduct all engineering courses such as automobile, civil engineering and electrical engineering. We are targeting nearly 250 students for our first intake he said.
