The funeral of Violet Wickremasinghe, mother of First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, was held at the General Cemetery, Kanatte, yesterday amidst a large gathering. East takes first step towards May 10 polls

The handing in of nominations for the upcoming Eastern Provincial Council Election begins today with Returning Officers of each district in the Eastern Province accepting nominations from political parties and Independent Groups until noon on April 3, the closing date for nominations.

LTTE fires at fishermen crossing into cleared area

Three fishermen died and another three injured when eleven fishermen held by LTTE terrorists who attempted to enter the cleared area at Omanthai Forward Defence Line were caught up in a crossfire yesterday around 01.30 a.m.

Janashakthi records highest net profit in insurance industry

Janashakthi Insurance recorded Rs. 525.77 million net profit after tax for the year ended 31 December 2007, recording the highest net profit margin from among the five leading insurance companies in the country, as per released records to date.
