Kaushalya gets suspended jail term

Gampaha High Court Judge M.M.A. Gaffoor ordered Cricketer Kaushalya
Lokuarachchi to pay a fine of Rs. 5,000 and sentenced him to two years
RI when he pleaded guilty to the charges of causing hurt to Nuwan
Wijewardena and causing the death of his mother Kumudani Chandrakanthi
Dharmaweera by driving his vehicle negligently on August 16, 2003.
The jail sentenced was suspended for a period of five years.
President's Counsel Daya Perera, senior counsel for Lokuarachchi
submitted to Court that his client is willing to pay compensation to the
deceased.
Prasantha Lal de Alwis, Senior Counsel watching the interest of the
deceased family members said that to pay any compensation to the Bavana
- Charitable organisation at Anuradhapura in memory of the deceased.
The Court also ordered Lokuarachchi to pay a sum of Rs. 200,000 to a
charitable organisation in the Gampaha District.
President's Counsel Daya Perera with Sampath Mendis appeared for
Lokuarachchi. State Counsel N. Wegodapola appeared for the Attorney
General.
