Great Western establishes all time record

The Great Western Estate tea factory.

Great Western Estate, managed by Talawakelle Tea Estates Limited established an "All time record" price of Rs. 680 for a Western High Grown BOP at the tea actions held on March 18.

Amidst the strong competition for the seasonal western invoices, at the weekly auctions recently, the plainer teas witnessed much less interest creating a significant price parity between the better teas and teas at the lower end of the market.

Initially, Somerset Estate recorded a price of Rs. 670 per kg for a BOP line surpassing its own record of Rs. 610 per kg for a Western High Grown BOP established in February 2007. This was further improved during the sale with a BOP invoice of Great Western Estate realising a price of Rs. 680 per kg, thereby establishing the highest record price achieved for a BOP invoice at the auctions.

The brokers of the record breaking invoice which was bought by Enura Trading Limited was Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers (Pvt) Limited. Commenting on achieving a record price for the third time since he assumed duties as the Manager of Great Western Estate, Group Manager Nishantha Abeysinghe said "Great Western continues to produce excellent teas with typical Ceylon character, which has contributed towards promoting Ceylon tea in the world market as tea that is unique and different from the teas produced in other countries".
