Heroin suspect ordered to furnish cash, personal bail

A suspect in a heroin case was ordered to furnish Rs. 15,000 cash and Rs. 100,000 personal bail with two sureties by Kandy Magistrate and ADJ Sumudu Premachandra.

Sergeant H.B.E.G. Senarath Banda of the Kandy division vice squad produced the suspect of Suduhumpola, Kandy with 30 mgs (two packets) of heroin.

He moved that the two packets of heroin be forwarded to the Government analyst for his examination and report.

Counsel for the suspect Nanda Senanayake informed court that the suspect is a permanent resident of Kandy and moved that he be released on bail. The Magistrate ordered the suspect to furnish cash and personal bail and directed him to appear in court when noticed.


Master plan to develop Ratnapura town

A master plan for the development of the Ratnapura town has been drawn up to be implemented before the end of the year at a cost of Rs. 360 million, said W. D. J. Seneviratna, Minister of Power and Energy.

He said widening of narrow roads and lanes will be the first phase of the programme. A width of 40 feet on the road from Warakathota bridge upto the Police Station will be carpeted. Pulungapitiya and Moragahayata junctions are to be systematically planned and developed.

The Minister said a market complex will be constructed in place of the present public market. The treasury will release the funds for the development programme.


Uva's health services to be upgraded

A rapid development programme to improve the Health Services the Uva Province has been launched by Dr. Pushpa Kumara, Health Minister, Uva Provincial Council. Under this programme the Base Hospitals are scheduled to be developed and upgraded within a short period.

Co-ordinating Officer, Health Ministry Uva P.C. Ajith Serasinghe said, "The aim of this programme to provide a better health service to all. Under this programme the MoH offices in Uva region too will be developed. He said in response to an appeal made by D.D.W. Wickramaratne, Agriculture Minister of Uva P.C. our ministry put up a new MoH office in Mahiyangana spending Rs. Three and half million with a view to uplift the health condition of the people in Uva region. Our ministry has launched a mobile Health Service throughout the Uva Province.


Chairs for Daham Schools

The Walapane Pradeshiya Sabha will provide chairs worth Rs. 50,000 to Daham Schools in the Walapane Divisional Secretariat area.

The funds are provided by Mrs. Vajira Kariyawasam, member, Walapane Pradeshiya sabha.


Railway line on right track

It has been targetted to complete the construction of the Matara - Kataragama railway line up to Beliatta by 2010 according to the Minister of Transport Dullas Alahapperuma.

The Minister said construction work of the bridge across Nilwala Ganga at Piladuwa is in progress. The bridge is a creation of the Austrian Government.

He said that the Matara-Beliatta Railway line will be vested with the people with the dawn of the New Year in 2010.

The six kilometre railway line from Matara to Kekanadura will be completed within a year. The railway line from Matara to Kataragama will be funded by the Government of Austria while the railway line from Kekanadura to Beliatta will be funded by the governments of India and Japan, the Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Nihal Somaweera told the Daily News .


Rural pre-school to be repaired

The "Runkekulu" pre-school at Medilla village situated in the Ambagamuwa (Ginigathena) DS division in the Nuwara-Eliya district is to be re- constructed by the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat.

The Central Provincial Councillor and the Chief SLFP organiser for Maskeliya W.G. Ranasinghe has funded Rs. 50,000 from his CPC decentralised budget-2008 for reconstruction of the rural pre-school which was in a state of disrepair during the past few years.

With the recommissioning of the pre-school its students will be able to carryout their educational activities in it more conveniently than earlier.

Rs. 3.9 m for livelihood development

A livelihood development programme has been launched in 39 Grama Niladhari divisions in the Haldummbulla Divisional Secretariat division under the Jathika Saviya, Gama Neguma programme said G. Saman Ratnayaka Divisional Secretary.

He said Rs. 3.9 million has been allocated by the Sri Lanka Samurdhi Authority for this.

Regular power failure always occur in Jambugahapitiya in the Katugastota area. The Ceylon Electricity Board has not taken steps to rectify this matter.

The residents of Jambugahapitiya said, that they have dim lights always in their houses and they are expecting a solution to this problem from the CEB.


Sathosa outlet for Kiriella

Steps have been taken to open four Sathosa Trading outlets in the Ratnapura district, to bring the consumer goods, nearer to the consumers in Ratnapura according to reports.

Already the Minister of Textiles J.K. Mahindaratna has earmarked and prepared the ground work for one such outlet in the Kiriella Town a spokesman told the Daily News.


Fillip for cinnamon in Hakmana

A special project has been launched to promote the cultivation of cinnamon in Hakmana Divisional Secretariat area by the Hakmana Divisional Agriculture Committee with assistance of the Department of Export Agriculture.

Under the project a target has been set to cultivate cinnamon in 22 acres of barren land in Beruwewela Grama Niladhari division under the guidance of Divisional Secretary, Hakmana, P. Somasiri.

It has also been planned under the project to train cinnamon peelers in addition to the cultivating of cinnamon and provide them with implements for cinnamon peeling free.

Under the project, 17 acres of barren land have already been cultivated with cinnamon according to Grama Niladhari, Beruwewela, Gamini Wanigasekara.
