Lankan women cricketers record second victory

Sri Lanka made an early finish to their third appearance of the Women’s Asia Cup Cricket with a convincing eight wicket victory over Bangladesh at Dambulla yesterday.

Bangladeshis were bowled out for 94 runs and the Sri Lanka women got passed their opponents total in the 20th over. Bangladesh women’s captain Salma Khatun won the toss and elected to bat and failed to achieve what she expected from their batswomen. Only three players were able to go past the two digit score.

They are opener Shathira Jakir, Ayesha Akhter and tail ender Tithy Sarkar. Jakir was the top scorer for the visitors with 25 runs while Akhter and Sarkar scored 24 and 17 respectively.

Seweni de Alwis, the leading wicket taker for Sri Lankan women team so far in the tournament did most of the damage to the Bangladeshi batting line-up as she took three for 13 including four maiden overs. Shiromala Weerakkody and Chamari Polgampola shared two wickets each while Chamani Seneviratne and skipper Shashikala Siriwardena bagged one wicket each to wrap up the Bangladeshi innings for the low total of 94.

Sri Lanka lost their best bat Dedunu Silva in the third over at 16 for just two runs. Then the Sri Lankan skipper Shashikala Siriwardena too departed after making only 10 to her name, falling at 36.

There onwards Chamari Polgampola and Sewini de Alwis went through to make a quick finish to the game getting involved in an unbeaten partnership of 59 runs maintaining a run rate of almost five.

Plogampola, made 32 in 62 balls including six boundaries while Sewini who joined at the fall of second wicket, contributed 26 runs with five boundaries.

Bangladeshis failed in both batting and bowling and they conceded Sri Lanka a handsome 25 runs as extras consisted of 19 wides. Sri Lanka occupies the second slot in the points table with 10 points while India is on top.
