President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the Chinese Embassy in Colombo yesterday and signed the condolence book for the victims of the recent earthquake and the devastation caused by it. Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and Chinese Ambassador Ye Dabo were present. The President earlier sent a condolence message to Chinese President Hu Jintao expressing the grief of the Government and people of Sri Lanka over the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake. Oil stormed to new record highs above $132 a barrel yesterday, stoking fears of global inflation and undermining equity markets that have recently been erasing their 2008 losses.

UNHRC: Lanka gains 101 votes

Sri Lanka yesterday obtained an absolute majority at the vote for the UN Human Rights Council, gaining 101 out of 192 votes on offer. Out of the six countries which vied for four slots on offer for Asia, Japan, South Korea, Bahrain and Pakistan secured seats leaving behind Sri Lanka and East Timor.

Rs. 2,430 m Performing Arts Theatre at Nomads Grounds
