Today is Republic Day

COLOMBO: Today is Republic Day. Sri Lanka became a Republic on May 22, 1972, with the adoption of a new Constitution that ended Dominion Status. The post of Governor General was abolished and a ceremonial post of President instituted.

All Ministries, Departments, Statutory Corporations and other State bodies will commemorate Republic Day.

The Heads of the department with the participation of staff should hoist the national flag today at 8.30 am and deliver a short speech on the importance of Republic Day. Ministry Secretaries, Chief Secretaries of Provincial Councils, Heads of Departments and Heads of State Corporations/Statutory bodies should instruct all institutions under them to give effect to this programme. The Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and National Integration has distributed a pamphlet titled the 'Birth of the Republic of Sri Lanka', among students.
