Dana Salawa at Pravachanodaya Pirivena
Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka will lay the foundation stone
for a new dana salawa at the Pravachanodaya Pirivena, Molligoda, Wadduwa
on June 8 at 9.00 a.m.
The ceremony will take place under the guidance of Chief Incumbent
Ven. Indra Sumana Nayaka Thera.

A felicitation ceremony in honour of Dr. Pandit W.D. Amaradeva will
be held at the Moratuwa Rawatawatte, Vishwa Samadhi Hall on June 8 at
5.30 p.m.

Masters Degree, Post Attorney Diploma Convocation
The annual Masters Degree and Post Attorney Diploma Convocation -
2008 of the Sri Lanka Law College was held at the BMICH yesterday.
Twenty three Attorneys-at-Law who successfully completed the Masters
Degree (LL.M) programme in International Trade Law of the University of
Wales (UK) conducted by the Advanced Legal Studies Unit of the Sri Lanka
Law College and 100 Attorneys-at-Law who successfully followed the Post
Attorney Diploma Courses in Intellectual Property Rights, Banking and
Insurance Laws, and International Trade Laws received their Masters
Degrees and Post Attorney Diplomas.

40 Years of Video Art
The German Cultural Centre Colombo will present ‘40 Years of Video
Art’ - a project motivated by Wulf Herzogenrath and initiated by the
Cultural Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany to rescue,
preserve and disseminate the cultural heritage of video art will be held
on June 11 to 13 at 5.30 p.m. at the Goethe Hall, German Cultural
Centre, 39, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7.

Open-air Rhythms
A Festival of Dance and Drumming featuring the Ravi Bandhu Vidyapathi
Dance Troupe and the Hevisi Bands of Bishop’s College, Ladies’ College,
S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia and the School for Blind, Ratmalana will
be held at the Open-air Theatre in the Anglican Cathedral premises at
Bauddhaloka Mawatha (next to BMICH) on June 14 at 6.00 p.m. There will
also be several guest appearances.
The event is co-ordinated by the Nuga Sevana Open Air Theatre.
Admission is free.

Mobile service
A two-day Janatha Sathkaraka mobile service organised by the Public
Administration and Home Affairs Ministry under Minister Karu
Jayasuriya’s concept of taking the administration to the people’s
doorsteps will be held at the Badulla Madya Maha Vidyalaya premises on
June 7 and 8 beginning at 9.00 a.m. each day.
Minister Karu Jayasuriya will preside.

The annual get-together of Royal College Group of ‘82 will be held at
the Colombo Women’s International Hall, Colombo 7 on June 14 (Day of the
Bradby Shield Colombo Leg) at 7.30 p.m.

Workshop for youth
A youth health, mental and personality development programme
organised by the Gampaha district office of the National Youth Services
Council will be held at the Pallansena Juvenile Reformatory, Negombo
from July 9 to 13.
The workshop includes Yoga exercises, music therapy, health
programmes, outdoor activities and positive thinking.

New appointment
The Board of Governors of the American Biographical Institute, USA
has been appointed K. Piyasena as the life-time Deputy Governor of the
Institute’s Research Association.
Piyasena is the first Director of Special Education in the Education
Ministry. He continued in this capacity for over two decades and
pioneered all major special education programmes in the country.
Piyasena also served as a consultant for UNESCO and UNICEF for the
promotion of special education in several other countries in the
Asia-Pacific Region.
He won the ICEVI International Leadership Award for special education
in 2006 and became the first special education expert in Asia to receive
this prestigious award.

Achievement
E.M. Pasindu Migara Peiris, Grade 2B student, Dharmaraja College,
Kandy has been awarded the first place at the Art Competition organised
by Monaliza International Foundation of Sri Jayewardenepura, Kotte.
Pasindu Migara has won the second and third places at the Kandy
district and all-island art competitions organised by the Foundation
last year.
Migara has been selected for the Golden Jubilee medal, and two bronze
medals for art at the competitions held by Monaliza Foundation for 2008.

Daphne Lord turns 80
Daphne Lord celebrated her 80th birthday on May 31. Aunty Daphne, as
she is fondly known by everyone, is a legend in her own lifetime. She
has been teaching for over 50 years and her attitude towards teaching is
still not jaded. One can always count on Aunty Daphne to come up with
something innovative.
She must surely have lost count of the number of pupils she has
taught, most of whom have excelled in their respective fields. A born
teacher, she has a knack of getting a message across, ever patient and
untiring even with the most difficult student. Aunty Daphne would never
rest until she got the desired result.

Athauda to address ILO Convention
Labour Relations and Manpower Minister Athauda Seneviratne will leave
for Geneva today to represent Sri Lanka at the 97th Convention of the
International Labour Organisation. He is due to address the Convention
on the need for enacting a legal framework to ensure the safety of
expatriate workers.

Ayurveda treatment for Chikungunya patients
A Suwasarana Ayurveda treatment service programme for Chikungunya
patients organised by the Indigenous Medical Students Committee will be
held at the Ruwanwella Maha Vidyalaya premises on June 8.
The second stage of this programme will be held in Ratnapura on June
12 and 13, Committee President M.A. Vikum Wimarshana said. |
