Meeting to mark Vajira Pelpita’s death anniversary

A commemorative meeting to mark the third death anniversary of veteran poet, journalist and politician Vajira Pelpita will be held under President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s patronage at the Committee Room A of the BMICH, Colombo on July 2 at 5 p.m., the Vajira Pelpita Memorial Foundation said in a press release.

Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara, Western Province Chief Minister Reginald Cooray and Vasudeva Nanayakkara will be among the speakers.

The release of the book Vajirage Katha including famous speeches made by Pelpita in the Provincial Council will be a highlight at this event.


Ex-Infantry Signallers’ Get-together

The 12th get-together of the Ex-Signallers of the 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLIF) will take place at the residence of retired warrant officer E. D. Hemapala at 35, Munhena, Maggona on June 29 at 10.00 a.m.

Association President Retired Warrant Officer K. A. Richard said Ex-Soldiers of the 1/SLLI Signal Platoon who wish to obtain membership of the Association should contact him on 0112893447.


Poson Perahera

A Poson Perahera organised by the Perahera Committee of the Wadduwa Samudrarama Viharaya will be held along the streets of Wadduwa on June 21 from 7 p.m.

The Perahera is held for the 27th time under the patronage of Viharadhipati Ven. Bopitiye Dhammissara Thera.


Medical camp

A special medical camp organised by the National Lotteries Board with the assistance of the Southern Development Authority will be held at the Akuressa District Hospital on June 21 in response to a request by Southern Provincial Councillor Manoj Sirisena and the National Lotteries Board Working Director H. G. Sirisena.

A team of special medical practitioners with a medical specialist working in Britain will participate in the medical camp.


Exhibition, sale

The annual exhibition and sale (pertaining centenary of Ahmadiyya khilafat) organised by Lajna Imaillah Sri Lanka (Ahmadi Ladies Association) will be held on June 22 from 9.00 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. at Ahmadiyya Jubilee Hall, 28, Jumma Masjid Road, Periyamulla, Negombo. The event will be inaugurated by A. H. Nasir Ahmad, National President, Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at, Sri Lanka.


Awareness programme

The Yatiyantota Police and Savumia Youth Foundation (SYF) in collaboration with Caritas Sri Lanka SEDEC will organise an awareness programme under the theme Safety and Peace on Estates to educate and make aware to prevent unwanted disasters in the plantation sector.

This event will take place under the patronage of Kegalle SSP Wilfred Mahanayake, with the participation of Avissawella ASP Asanga Karawita, Police Officers at Yatiyantota and Kitulgala at Garagoda Muslim Maha Vidyalaya, Yatiyantota on June 21 from 10.00 a.m to 1.00 p.m.

Similar Disaster preparedness programmes will be organised in Kegalle and Kandy in collaboration with each OICs.


AGM

The Annual General meeting of the Kiribathgoda Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya Old Girl’s Association will be held at the school hall on June 22 at 2 p.m.


Row at Dansala

An armed gang had stormed a Poson Dansala at Park Road, Kandy on Wednesday night and caused a major stir by dashing food on the ground along with dishes and plates after threatening the organisers.

Kandy Police investigating the incident has arrested a suspect in this connection.
 


Electric fence protection against elephants

People in about fifteen villages of the Palaagala divisional secretariat area - a territory of the North Central Provincial district of Anuradhapura - are happy about the newly erected electrified fence between the two wildlife reserves of Moragolla and Kahalla-Pallekele because those giant mammals cannot easily infiltrate into their villages as earlier owing to the fence.

The happy villagers have a complaint they are of the opinion that a herd of wild elephants is stranded in certain forest area being unable to return to their natural habitat in 'Kahalla-Pallekele'.

The electrified fence, which is about 30 kilometres long, has recently been erected by the North Central Provincial Council with financial assistance of 'Plan Sri Lanka', a voluntary development agency.


Deputy Minister funds estate road

Measures are being taken by the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat to reconstruct the Rozella-Abagald Estate road in the Ambagamuwa (Ginigathena) DS division in the Nuwara Eliya district.

The Nuwara Eliya district Parliamentarian and the Deputy Minister of Justice and Law Reforms V. Puththirasigamani has funded Rs. 150,000 from his parliamentary decentralised budget - 2008 for reconstruction of the estate road which was in a state of disrepair during the past few years.
