Appointment letters
A groups of 720 apprentice officers of the National Cadet Corps
selected from a written test and an interview held by the Education
Ministry will be posted to difficult area schools under the purview of
Provincial Councils as English teachers.
They will receive their appointment letters from Education Services
Minister Nirmala Kotelawala at the Education Ministry auditorium on July
16 at 10 a.m. An education Ministry release said these recruits are
expected to attend to cadeting work and training activities in their
respective schools and engage in the teaching of English according to
school time tables.
Achievement
Ven. Kebiliyapola Dhammalankara Thera of Nawa Polonnaru Gal viharaya,
Dehiwala, has been awarded Rajakeeya Panditha degree by the Oriental
Studies Society of Sri Lanka.
Ven. Thera is the Principal of the Sri Saddhananda Dhamma School and
a member of the tutorial staff of the Shastrananda Pirivena, Dehiwala.
He is also a past pupil of the Dharmodaya Pirivena, Madanwala, Vidyodaya
pirivena and Aquinas College Colombo.
Ven. K. Dhammalankara Thera is the senior pupil of the most Ven. Dr.
Kanumuldeneye Sri Dharmasoka Nayaka maha Thera, Viharadhipathi, Nawa
Polonnaru Gal viharaya, Dehiwala, and the Director of the International
Vihara Foundation, and Thripitakavedie Hav-ovita Gunananda Thera, a
prominent Dhammadutha monk in U.S.A.
Receives scholarship
Supun Hasanka Kandaudahewa of No: 61, Bandaranayake Mawatha,
Katubedda, Moratuwa has been awarded a scholarship by the High
Commission of India under ICCR scheme to follow Bachelor of Computer
Application course in Bangalore University. He is a past student of
Royal College, Colombo 07 and represented college cricket team in U-13,
U-15, U-16 age categories.
Supun continues to excel in his social activities as the Vice
President of Leo Club of Moratuwa Orient.
Buddhist short film festival
A Buddhist short film festival 2008 organised by the Jathika Sangha
Sammelanaya will be held on July 24 at 6 p.m. at the Elphinstone
Theatre, Maradana.
Buddhist talk
Prof. Raja de Alwis will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on
“Developing the Skill of Living in the Present” at a meeting of the
Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, July 19 at 4.30 p.m. at
Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
Jeyaraj Fernandopulle Vocational Training Centre
The Jeyaraja Fernandopulle Vocational Training Centre built at
Kaluwarippuwa, Katana at a cost of Rs. 10 million by the Vocational and
Technical Training Ministry will be opened by Minister Piyasena Gamage
on July 16 at 9 a.m. to coincide with the third month remembrance of
late Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle.
Katana SLFP Organiser Mrs. Sudarshanee Fernandopulle, her daughter
Samurdhi, son Bhanuka and family members will also participate.
Media workshop today
The Thurstan College Media Society has organised an inter-school
media workshop on July 15 at the College Auditorium, with journalist,
Edwin Ariyadasa gracing the occasion.
Along with a discussion chaired by Colombo University Media Faculty
lecturer Ajantha Hapuarachchi, other key media figures and prominent
past Thurstanites will conduct sessions. The panel includes the Chief
Editor of the Iridha Divaina - Gamini Sumanasekera, Nava Yugaya Editor-Sujeewa
Dissanayake, Sirasa News Director - Susil Kindelpitiya, and radio
personality - Ajith Indrajith. Among the participants will be many
invitee schools. The Thurstan College OBU is sponsoring the event.

Corporation presents lyric composer poet and free lance journalist W.K.
Sarath Wimalasiri (Bank of Ceylon - Head Office) through the
Shraddhanjalee Programme from 12.00 p.m. to 12.45 p.m. on July 17, (Esala
Full Moon Poya day).
Prize giving
The annual Prize Giving of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, will be
held on Friday, July 18, at the College Hall from 4 p.m. onwards. Dr.
Palitha Kohona will grace the event as the Chief Guest.
Fund - raiser
The fourth consecutive sing along programme organized by the Prince
of Wales’ College Old Boys’ Association will be held on July 19, at the
Banquet Hall, BMICH from 7 p.m. onwards. The purpose behind this project
is to raise much needed funds for the development of Sports activities
at Prince Of Wales’, College.

Celebration on Tuesday, July 15 at 10 a.m. at the College Main Hall.

The latest edition of Jayakody Seneviratne’s Sinhala novel
“Patalevilla” will be launched at the Dayawansa Jayakody Book Exhibition
Hall, Ven. S. Mahinda Mawatha, Colombo 10 at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July
15. The novel depicts an interesting aspect of the island’s rural life.

Ramzi's bridal collection - 2008 with symposium bridal Boutique will
be held on Sunday, July 20, at 7.00 p.m. at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and
Convention Centre.
Renowned beautician, hair dresser and bridal designer Ramzi Rahaman
will present his bridal collection titled "Ramzi's Bridal Collection -
2008" for the second consecutive year at the bridal fair 2008.
Death sentence
Hemachandra Nanayakkara Galle group correspondent
Dangala Pathirage Sunil alias Mahathun of Panagoda in the Neluwa
police area, an accused in a murder case was sentence to death after a
lengthly trial by Galle High Court Judge, Chandrasena Rajapakse, on July
1 .
In this case the Attorney General indicted Dangalla Pathirage Sunil
alias Mahathun of Panagoda in Neluwa with the murder of Devani Guruge
Gunadasa on 8 September 1996.
Dr. U.C.G. Perera, M.S. Korapitiya, Athapattu Hewage Kularathne of
Pannimulle Mrs. I.G. Nadawathi Kudagala, Elpitiya, S.I. Heran and P.C.
Syril also gave evidence.
Miss. Chathurangi Mahawaduge State Counsel prosecuted. Premachandra
Semage, Attorney-at-Law appeared for the accused. |
