Clove exports hit record 5000 tonnes

This year will be a record year for Sri Lankan export of cloves as for the first time in its history, exports will surpass the 5000 tonnes figure and foreign exchange earnings will be over Rupees three billion, Spices and Allied Products’ Producers’ and Traders’ Association (SAPPTA), its Past Chairman Gulam Chatoor, said.

Sri Lanka has already exported during Jan/June 2008, 4838 tonnes of cloves and should end up by the end of the year, exporting around 5500 tonnes.

Earnings from exports during Jan/June 2008 have been Rs. 2.7 billion and for the year 2008, this figure should go past Rs. 3 billion.

Exports of Cloves from Sri Lanka have been mainly to India as Sri Lankan cloves enter India, duty free under the Indo Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (ISFTA).
