Buddhist talk
Former Public Trustee U. Mapa will deliver a public Buddhist talk in
English on "Art of Letting Go" at a meeting of the Servants of the
Buddha Society on Saturday, September 6, at 4.30 p.m. at the Maitri

Maria Montessori remembered
The Good Shepherd Maria Montessori Training Centre, Colombo 7, will
commemorate the 138th birth anniversary of their Founder Dr. Maria
Montessori, on Thursday, September 4 at 3.00 p.m. with a Thanksgiving
Eucharistic Celebration at the Convent Chapel with Rev. Fr. Sanjay
Vincent as the chief celebrant.
Selected essays by Deshamanya N.U. Jayawardena
A commemorative volume of "Selected Essays in Economic Policy" by
Deshamanya N.U. Jayawardena, will be launched on Tuesday September 2 at
7.00 p.m. at People's Bank Staff Training Centre Auditorium, 38, D.R.
Wijewardene Mawatha, Colombo 10 as part of the commemoration
celebrations in honour of the birth centenary of the late Deshmanya N.U.
Jaywardena, first Sri Lankan Governor of the Central Bank, Senator,
banker and financier.
Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka will be the Chef Guest and
Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy, Director - Economic Affairs, Commonwealth
Secretariat will be the Guest of Honour and will deliver a special
speech on the book and global economic polices. Central Bank Governor
Ajith Nivard Cabraal and J.D. Bandaranayaka, Chairman, Ceylon Chamber of
Commerce will also participate.
Holy mass
A Holy Mass and get-together will be held on September 2 at 3.30 p.m.
at the Jeewana Yagaya Gospel Pray Centre, Kurana, Negombo to celebrate
the 60th birthday and the completion of 30 years service to God of
Paster Edward Jayamanna.
National Business Awards on Nov 20

The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka is planning to hold the
National Business Excellence Awards 2008 for the fifth consecutive year.
A ceremony is scheduled to be held on 20th November 2008 at Colombo
Hilton Hotel.
The National Business Excellence Awards have been especially designed
to recognise and honour the business community and organisations which
make a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of the
country.
Selection criteria were worked out by a team of professionals for
these prestigious awards.
Applications should be submitted to National Chamber of Commerce of
Sri Lanka on or before 15th September 2008 with relevant documents.
10 million jak plants target

Matale Agrarian Services Commissioner Madhawa Warnakulasooriya said
under the 'Apiwawamu Ratanagamu', National Food Production Drive it was
implemented to plant ten million Jak plants in the country.
According to this programme in Matale district 60 percent have
already completed. During the year 2007, 1785 Jak plants were planted.
In 2008 in the first six months 3550 plants are to be planted.

'Nakajima Institution' in Japan recently donated surgical instruments
worth hundred million rupees to Matale district base hospital, on a
request of Mayor of Matale Hilmi Creem.
