Union Assurance Recreation Club helps Blind
Sri Lanka Welfare Society of Blind organised their Annual White Cane
Day recently at the vocational training centre, Liyanagemulla, Seeduwa
to mark the World White Cane Day on October 15. The main objective of
this occasion was to distribute white canes to the blind community.
White Cane Day was first introduced by an American Lawyer specialised
in Human Rights who contested in Courts on behalf of the members of the
Blind Community with regard to the safety when walking on highways and
other public places. The White Cane Day was proposed during a conference
conducted in Colombo by the UNESCO in 1969 and was decided to hold an
International White Cane Day every year on October 15. |
