Five share "Alternative Nobel prize" of 2008
STOCKHOLM: Two Indians and another three people respectively from the
United States, Somalia and Germany were awarded Wednesday the 2008 Right
Livelihood Award, often dubbed the Alternative Nobel Prize.
They will share a 2 million kronor (about 290,000 U.S. dollars) cash
prize to be split in four parts.
Two Indian activists Krishnammal and Sankaralingam Jagannathan and
their organization LAFTI (Land for the Tillers' Freedom) (India) have
won the prize "for their work dedicated to realizing in practice the
Gandhian vision of social justice and sustainable human development,"
the jury of the prize said in a statement.
American journalist Amy Goodman shared the award "for developing an
innovative model of truly independent political journalism that brings
to millions of people the alternative voices that are often excluded by
the mainstream media."
