Bad light saves St. Aloysius

Bad light deprived certain victory for St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa when play came to a halt at 3.30 p.m. against St. Aloysius College, Galle in their Under 19 inter school cricket tournament match played at Moratuwa.

In reply to St. Aloysius College score of 176 Sebs declared at 253 for 5 with two good knocks coming off the bats of Kasun Fernando 60 and Prageeth Dilshan 65. Earlier Malith Cooray made 41 for the visitors and Anuk de Alwis bagged 3 for 26.

In their second essay Galle lads were 23 for 5 when the match was called off.

Cambrians take major honours

The All Island Six-a-side champions Prince of Wales’ College, Moratuwa had to be satisfied with a first innings lead against Mahinda College, Galle in their inter school Under 19 Cricket Tournament match which ended in a draw.

Cambrians batting first were all out for 180 with Thisaru de Mel missing a well deserved century by 9 runs.

He had ten fours in his knock and occupied the crease for 275 minutes. Kaushalliya Gajasinghe captured 4 for 33. Visitors in reply made 139 with some resistance coming from Sajith Kelumpriya who made 49 runs. Shehan Jayasuriya was the pick of the bowlers for Cambrians with 6 for 56.

In their second essay homesters were reeling at 71 for 7 when Stumps were drawn at 4 p.m. due to bad light.

Chief scores:

Prince of Wales - 180 (Thisaru de Mel 91, Shehan Jayasuriya 31, Kaushalliya Gajasinghe 4/33, Tharaka Nimesh 2/38 and 71/7 (Nipuna Peiris 27, Kaushalliya Gajasinghe 3/25).

Mahinda - 139 (Sajith Kelumpriya 49, Dinuwan Rajakaruna 29, Rumesh Buddhika 31, Shehan Jayasuriya 6/56, Buddhika de Alwis 3/30).


Eranga (84) excels for Richmond

Erosh Samarasooriya top scored with 84 for Richmond in their total of 135 on the rain curtailed first day in their school cricket encounter against Royal at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Royal were 29 for 1 when bad light intervened play around 4.30 pm.

Moratu Vidyalaya win by five wickets

Moratu Vidyalaya registered their second successive victory when they defeated Pilyandala Central by five wickets in their inter-school under 19 cricket tournament match conduct at Moratuwa.

Continuing on at their overnight score of 88 for 2 Vidyalians could not surpass the opponent’s score due to good fielding and they were all out for 164 runs and fell short by six runs. Two overnight batsmen Sudeepa Kelum and Chatura Hemakumara made 48 and 50 runs respectively.

In their second essay Centralians were skittled out for paltry 40 runs with Lasitha Mendis doing the wreckage with an excellent performance of 7 for 12 runs.

Piliyandala Central 170 and 40 Lasitha Mendis 7/12, Chatura Hemakumara 2/4.

Moratu Vidyalaya (88/2 overnight) all out 164 - (Sudeepa Kelum 48, Chatura Hemakumara 50, Sameera Chatranga 3/4, Chanka Ruwansiri 3/63, Sajith Meebindu 2/21 and 50/5.


Angelo leads Peterites

St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya under the leadership of Sri Lanka under 19 player Angelo Perera, will field a formidable team in the 2008-09 inter-school cricket season.

With a strong batting line up and a penetrative bowling attack they will be a force to be reckoned with this season, having started the season on a winning note by beating Joseph Vaz, Wennappuwa by 10 wickets.

Third year player Andre Berenger who scored heavily in the recently concluded under 17 tournament will open the batting with Isuru Peiris. The middle order will comprise the experienced Shivanga Ranasuriya, skipper Angelo Perera, Akshu Fernando and the hard-hitting Vinod Perera who hit a sparkling 71 against Joseph Vaz. Vinod Perera will also share the new ball with second year player Chatura Peiris. Skipper Angelo Perera with his left-arm spin will spearhead the spin attack having captured a match-bag of 10 wickets against Joseph Vaz.


Sports Meet of Stafford Int’l

The annual Sports Meet of Stafford International School will be held on Friday, October 31 at the NCC grounds from 1 p.m. onwards. The chief guest will be the f ormer principal of the school, Mrs. Noreen Welikala.


Royal Thomian soccer match

The annual football match between traditional rivals Royal and S. Thomas will be played at the Royal College Sports Complex on October 24 at 4.00 p.m. The junior matches will commence at 2.30 p.m.
