Cipriani replaces Wilkinson in elite England squad
Danny Cipriani was drafted into England's 32-man elite squad on
Tuesday to replace Jonny Wilkinson in one of three changes forced by
injury and form.
Flanker Michael Lipman and fullback Nick Abendanon come in for Lewis
Moody and Tom Varndell, but the inclusion of Cipriani as England's
first-choice flyhalf was the most notable switch.
The 20-year-old only returned to action this month after five months
out with a serious ankle injury, but has been judged fit enough to
replace international rugby's record scorer, who sustained the latest in
a long line of injuries last month when he dislocated his right knee
while playing for Newcastle.
"Cipriani has performed well since he came back and, while there was
strong competition from other players, I have decided to give him the
chance to compete for a place in the 22 for the Pacific Islanders
match," England manager.
England plays that match Nov. 8 before taking on Australia, South
Africa and New Zealand on the next three weekends.
Before fracturing and dislocating his right ankle in last season's
English playoff semifinals, Cipriani appeared to have overtaken
Wilkinson as England's lynchpin. LONDON, AP |
