The Hotel School has decided to introduce a degree programme for the
hotel industry from 2010.
According to Cornel Perera the new chairman of the Hotel School they
have decided to recruit foreign lecturers from Germany, Australia,
Singapore and Malaysia for this. “We have to maintain high standards
since the University Grants Commission has to ratify it,” he said.
He said the current programmes launched by the School could
accommodate around 1300 students and this too would be increased to 1500
by the end of the year. “We are also looking at the possibility of
training staff of Dubai’s Jumeirah Hotel Chain Group in Sri Lanka.” It
is estimated that the group needs over 60,000 staff in the next three
years and the training offered in Philippines is not adequate to meet
this demand.
A special committee has also being appointed to maintain minimum
standard at all private schools that are conducting tourism courses.
Tourism Ministry Secretary George Michael said a scheme will be
introduced to have minimum standards in ‘small’ time hotels and
restaurants. “They will also look into the mushrooming Ayurvedha centres,
“ he said.
He said the tension in Tamil Nadu and SriLankan Airlines reducing
frequency from over 100 to 70 to Indian destinations have resulted in
the drop on Indian arrivals.
