Tiran Alles Rights plea terminated

COLOMBO: The Supreme Court terminated the rights plea of the former
Airport and Aviation Company Chairman Tiran Alles, yesterday. The Bench
comprised Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC with Justice K. Sripavan and
Justice Ms. Chandra Ekanayake.
Deputy Solicitor General Buvaneka Aluvihare for the respondents
informed Court that petitioner Alles has been indicted in the Colombo
High Court. The DSG however, submitted that the Attorney General would
not object for enlarging him on bail.
The petitioner cited the Defence Secretary, the IGP, DIG Mahinda
Balasuriya and six Police officers attached to the Terrorist
Investigation Unit as respondents.
The petitioner stated that he had been unlawfully and arbitrarily
arrested by the respondents on May 30, 2007 in violation of his rights.
He stated that the arrest had been politically motivated and that he had
never had dealings with the LTTE nor disbursed money to the terrorits.
The petitioner sought a declaration that his rights had been
violated.
