Reduced train fares from December 1

Train fares will be reduced by Rs.5 to Rs.40 with effect from December 1 said General Manager of the Railways, Lalithasiri Gunaruwan at a media conference held yesterday.

As a percentage it will be a 6 to 17 percent reduction. “There will be a price reduction in the second and third class Government and private season tickets as well” he added. These price reductions has clustered with in five groups which is 0 to 10 kilometres, 11 to 50 kilometres, 51 to 100 kilometres, 101 to 200 kilometres and 200 kilometres upwards.

Due to the price reduction of diesel through the 2009 budget the Government was able to reduce the train fares.
