Drunken driver kills mom, infant
INDIKA POLKOTUWA and INDRANI THORADENIYA
A 38-year-old mother and her eight-month-old baby were killed on the
spot when they were knocked down by a private coach at Penideniya,
Peradeniya yesterday.
The driver was under the influence of liquor at the time of the
incident, police said. The victim was on her way to a shop. The driver
has surrendered to police.
Appointments to Northern grads

Portrait unveiling
The portrait of the late H.E. Weerasooriya, Attorney-at-Law will be
unveiled by Judge of the Supreme Court Chandra Ekanayake on November 26
at 2.30 p.m. at the Law Library, Courts Complex Fort, Galle.
The unveiling will take place under the auspices of the Galle Law
Association.
Awards ceremony
The Language Training Division of the Bandaranaike Centre for
International Studies (BCIS) will conduct its awards ceremony on
November 29, from 10 a.m to 12.30.p.m at the BCIS auditorium.
Certificates will be awarded to students who have successfully completed
a beginners, intermediate or Advanced Level language course at the
Centre. The BCIS offers language training in Sinhala, Tamil, Chinese,
Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Hindi.

Lecture, discussion
A lecture and discussion by Caj Soderlund, Senior Adviser,
Secretariat for Nordic Cooperation, Nordic Council of Ministers on
Globalisation Politics: The Performance of the Nordic Countries
organised by the International Centre for Ethnic Studies, Colombo will
be held on Monday at 5.30 p.m. at ICES, 5, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 8.
Convocation
The Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Educiaotn, which
comes under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry will hold its
fifth convocation to award diploma certificates to 1,700 on Monday at
9.30 a.m. at the BMICH under the Chairmanship of Higher Education
Minister Prof. Wiswa Warnapala.
Media seminar
A media seminar will be held today at Zahira College, Mawanella,
under auspices of the Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum.
Principal Naeem Marikkar will preside. Advanced Level students will
participate in this seminar titled ‘Media in 21st Century’. Malaysian
Embassy First Secretary Mohamed Akmal will be the Chief Guest at the
certificate awarding ceremony.
Dinner dance
The Old Boys’ Association of Sri Jayawardenapura Vidyalaya will
present their annual dinner dance to celebrate the 187th Anniversary on
November 28 at the BMICH.
This is a fund raising event for the Sports Complex and Ground
Development Project.
