Suspended term, fine for cattle transporters
Matale district group correspondent
Seventeen heads of cattle including three buffaloes being transported
in a lorry were detected by the Dambulla Police.
The offenders were produced before Dambulla Magistrate Nimal
Ranaweera convicted of the offences and fined Rs. 500 each.
In addition they were imposed three months rigorous imprisonment,
suspending it for five years.
The Magistrate ordered the animals to be handed over to Beligamuwa
Farm fixing another date for a verdict. Chandana de Silva and L.D.
Perera were charged in this regard.
A.M. Munasingha, Attorney-at-Law appeared for Animal Invioble Trust
while Dambulla Police prosecuted.
Bus driver remanded

A bus driver who tried to escape after injuring seven pre-school
children by driving his vehicle recklessly at Bobella on Matale-Dambulla
road in Naula Police Division was caught by the Dambulla Police and
handed over to the relevant police station.
According to the police this person was involved in four vehicle
accidents within the month of November.
The suspect M.G. Pushpa Ranjith was produced before Dambulla
Magistrate Nimal Ranaweera and remanded him till 08.12.2008. Naula
Police prosecuted.
SLABS bi-annual conference
The Sri Lanka Association for Buddhist Studies (SLABS) will hold its
third bi-annual international conference at the Buddha Sravaka Bhiksu
University, Anuradhapura, from December 8 to 10.
This year conference will accommodate more than 125 papers, about
half is from local scholars whereas the other half is from scholars
outside Sri Lanka.
The theme of this year conference is: Studies in Buddhist thought,
History and Culture: Recent Trends, wide enough to accommodate a variety
of interests in the field of Buddhist studies.
Death of Mervin Perera DHARMA SRI ABEYRATNE
Veteran musician Mervin Perera passed away last afternoon while being
taken to the Kalubovila Hospital. He was 69.
Mervin Perera served as a music teacher at Government schools for a
long time.
He was born on September 11, 1940.
Mervin Perera received his primary education at the Paiyagala Roman
Catholic School in 1945. He is the father of singer Amal Perera.
Special religious ceremony
A special religious ceremony to invoke blessings on the brave
soldiers engaged in the fight against terrorism and also to usher peace
to the country.
This is organised by Bakiyathus Salihath Jummah Mosque, Ambepitiya,
Beruwala to coincide with the Haj festival and will be held at the
mosque premises on December 10 at 4 p.m.
Disabled to have easy access to public places
The Social Service and Social Welfare Services Ministry has
implemented various programmes to provide ample facilities for the
disabled to have easy access to public places.
The Secretariat for the Disabled together with the community based
Rehabilitation Programme have also taken necessary measures to provide
funds needed for the implementation of this programme islandwide.
As an initial step, the Ministry has already taken steps to provide
these facilities for disabled people at the following public places.
1. The Prime Minister office, 2. Maradana, Fort, Slave Island,
Ratmalana, Ragama, and Seeduwa Railway Stations, 3. National Museum, 4.
John De Silva Hall, 5. Elphinstone Hall, 6. Dehiwala Municipal Council,
7. Public Library at Colombo and Dehiwala, 8. Road Signal System at
Seeduwa, 9. The Town Hall in Colombo, 10. Sethsiripaya Complex.
