Dinesh/ Mahesh and Thakshila/ Sujeewa teams take Beach Volleyball

The Dine -sh/Mahesh team from Katana outplayed the DP beach spikers
from Air Force to emerge the men’s champions of the 2008 Beach
Volleyball Championship which ended at the Paradise Beach beside the Mt.
Lavinia Hotel, Mt. Lavinia yesterday.
The winning team made an outstanding effort in blocking and attacking
under the difficult conditions of overcast, windy and rainy weather to
beat the Dhammika/Pubudu team 2-0. The scores read 21-17, 21-14.
In the women’s final, Thakshila/Sujeewa team (Sri Lanka Ports
Authority) beat Geethika/Iresha from CGR (Railway Department) 2-0 to
become the champions. At the end of the two sets, the scores read 21-19,
21-14.
Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, Sri Lanka Beach Volleyball
Assocation along with the Mt. Lavinia Hotel organized the tournament
this year.
The Mt. Lavinia hotel was the main sponsor for this year’s beach
Volleyball Nationals.
The preliminary rounds took place at the Negombo and Bentota beaches
and 16 men’s teams and seven women’s teams had entered the final stage.
President Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and Minister of Ports
Development Dilan Perera and officials from the SLVBF, SLBVA and Mt.
Lavinia were present at the finals and awards ceremony and a good
supportive crowed was also present despite the rainy weather.
