Electric fences to avoid human - elephant conflict
Mohammed Naalir
Plans are afoot to erect electric fences surrounding the forests
where elephants roam frequently considering the safety of villages while
establishing a typical environment to elephants, North Western Province
Wild Life Director Manjula Amararatne said.
He said that this project will be implemented in three stages and
electric fences will be erected surrounding the forests in Anuradhapura,
Kekirawa and Galoya areas, where the threat from wild elephants is high.
Amararatne said that due to attacks by elephants several persons were
killed. Also a large number of elephants were killed by the villagers
for various reasons. He expressed confidence that these measures will
help to protect the human lives as well as the lives of elephants. A
considerable sum has been set aside for this purpose, Amararatne added.
