Aussie media goes ga-ga over 'next big thing'

Teenager Bernard Tomic was hailed as the next big thing Tuesday by an Aussie media desperate for a new tennis star after the 16-year-old became the Australian Open's youngest male winner.

The fresh-faced "man-child" beat Italy's Potito Starace 7-6 (7/5), 1-6, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (8/6) aged 16 years and 90 days on Monday, smashing Todd Woodbridge's 1988 record by 116 days.

With Australian tennis in the doldrums, the press here wasted no time in hyping him as the answer to the country's sporting woes.

"Next Big Thing," screamed the Herald Sun.
