Maithri Buddha ceremony
A religious ceremony has been organised on January 30 and 31 at the
Warakapola Maithrimuni Temple, organised by the Lanka Maithrimuni
Society under the patronage of the Chief Incumbent of the Temple, Ven.
Nindane Chandrawimala Thera seeking blessings for peace to the country,
prosperity for all and power for the people at the occasion on the
enthronement of the Maithri Budhisatthva image.
The motorcade perahera will leave the Maithri Viharaya at 7.30 a.m.
on January 30 proceed along the Kurunegala road chanting Seth Pirith and
reach the Sri Natha Devalaya at 5.30 p.m.
A large gathering of devotees is expected at the Sri Natha Devalaya
to receive the Maithri Bodhisatthva pilimaya.
The ceremonies will follow at the Devalaya from 6.30 p.m. to 7.45
p.m. On the following day January 31 at 7.00 a.m. the procession will
proceed to Methmuni Viharaya where religious ceremonies would be held
under the patronage of Ven. Dr. Ambalangoda Sri Sumangala Thera, the
Mahanayake of the Amarapura Nikaya.
Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam Birth anniversary
Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam's 65th Birth Anniversary will be celebrated on
January 31 at 7.00 p.m. at the Bishop's College Auditorium.
This year on January 31 India's renowned Folk Theatre Purisai
Duraisami Kannappa Thambiran's Therukoothu - a classical story from
Mahabharatha, 'The Disrobing of Princess Draupadi' will be staged.
Therukoothu is a traditional and popular folk theatre form of Tamil
Nadu with an ancient history. Therukoothu literally translated into
English means Street Theatre.
The group has performed throughout India and has appeared at major
international festivals including those in France, Sweden, Singapore and
Columbia.
This troupe is coming from New Delhi after representing Tamil Nadu at
the India's Republic Day celebrations. In addition to this theatre a
performance of a Thovil Ceremony by Southern Sri Lankan Dancers will
also be held.
Both these items will be held at the Bishop's College Auditorium on
January 31 at 7.00 p.m.
Vihara Maha Devi Balika anniversary
Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda will celebrate her
33rd anniversary on February 1. Founded under the patronage of Ven.
Weerangule Sri Saranatissa Thera of Sri Sudharshanaramaya, Kiribathgoda
at the time of President J. R. Jayawardene, Vihara Maha Devi has come a
long way to flourish as one of the most sought after girls' schools in
the Gampaha district.
The anniversary will be celebrated with a blood donation campagain to
support the heroes of the country, who fight for the freedom of the
North, and an alms-giving for 33 bhikkus.
Lecture
Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centres, Sri Lanka will hold a lecture on
‘Redefining Spirituality for Current World Crisis’ by Rajyogini Dr.
Nirmala Kajaria, Head of the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centres of Asia
Pacific region, at Savsiripaya, 123, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7, on
February 1 at 5.30 p.m.
Prefects Day
The annual Prefects Day of the Primary Section of Prince of Wales’
College, Moratuwa will be held today at 8 a.m. at the college main hall.
The chief guest will be Zonal Director of Primary Education T. S.
Jayarathne and the guest of honour will be former Sectional Head of the
Primary Section of Prince of Wales’ College Mrs. Kamani Shantha Lelwala.
Calligraphy and painting classes
The cultural section of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran,
will conduct calligraphy and painting classes commencing February 2. The
classes will be conducted once a week on Mondays from 3 p.m. onwards at
the Cultural Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran, No. 6, Sir Ernest

Teacher felicitation
The Parent-Teacher Association of Wesley College Colombo 9, will hold
a felicitation ceremony for staff both past and present, who have
completed 25 years, today at 10.30 a.m. at the college hall.
Each teacher will be presented with a plaque and a gift voucher at
the ceremony. A special fund is to be inaugurated on this day.
Mahanama closed for independence
In view of the Independence Day celebrations on February 4, Mahanama
Vidyalaya, Colombo 3, will remain closed from January 29 to February 4.
Annual convocation
Vidya Jyothi Prof. (Eng) Dayantha Wijeyesekera will be the chief
guest at the Fifth Convocation of the College of Chemical Sciences (CCS)
to be held on January 30 at Cinnamon Grand, Colombo.
53 graduates, 9 Licentiates and 32 Laboratory Technologists who have
completed their tertiary studies at the College, which is the
educational arm of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, will receive their
certificates and awards from Prof. Wijeyesekera.
Prize-giving
The prize-giving for the winners of the quiz programme conducted by
the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and broadcast Thendral FM Service
during the month of Ramazan to be held today at the Kumarathunga Studio,
