Youth Council Diploma
Applications are invited from youth between 18 to 24 years who passed
the G.C.E. (O/L) examination with Sinhala, Maths, Music or Dancing for
the diploma courses conducted by the National Youth Services Council.
This three year diploma courses on music and dancing are conducted at
the National Youth Centre, Maharagama and a resident course will be
conducted at the Belwood Aesthetic Centre, Galaha, Kandy.
These free courses are meant for the youth who were unable to get
into the university.
Qualified youth may send in their applications to reach, The
Assistant Director (Cultural), The National Youth Services Council, 65,

Modern language courses
Edward Weerasinghe Kelaniya group correspondent
The Department of Modern Languages of the Kelaniya University has
made arrangements to conduct diploma courses in Japanese, French,
Russian, German and Korean.
The courses are designed for those wishing to continue higher studies
and to seek employment in the tourism trade.
According to the Registrar of the Kelaniya University W.M.
Karunaratne, special attention will be paid to oral and listening
skills.
Qualifications are passes in six subjects including English at the
GCE (Ordinary Level) and should be above 18 years. For further details

Annual zoological session concludes
The ninth annual sessions of the South Asian National Zoological
Association was held at the Palm Beach Hotel Mount Lavinia from February
11 to 15 attended by a large number of Reproduction Health Scientists,
Zoological Directors, Veterinary Surgeons and Senior Technicians from
South Asian countries.
The association began with its maiden sessions held in Kathmandu,
Nepal on August 4, 2000 on the initiative of Zoo outreach.
Carnatic music festival
Sri Thiyagarajar Aaradana, the Carnatic music festival will be held
on Wednesday, at 6.00 p.m. at the Indian Cultural Centre, 133,
Bauddhaloka Mw., Colombo 04.
This is an annual event held in India where all the Carnatic
musicians around the world gather to sing Sri Thiyagarajar’s
compositions as homage to the great musician.
Rajitha off to Male
Minister of Construction and Engineering Services Dr. Rajitha
Senaratne left the island to Maldives for a preexamination for
construction of a modern sports complex for Maldives to be undertaken by
the State Engineering Corporation (SEC) following a discussion the
Minister had with the Maldives Sports Minister.
Envoy visits Ampara
Indian High Commissioner Sri Alok Prasad made a visit to Ampara
district to assess development programmes initiated by the Government.
He was briefed by the Government Agent Sunil Kannangara at the Ampara
GA’s office and subsequently had a media briefing.
The High Commissioner assured the media that India’s commitment for
assisting Sri Lanka in the present context.
Prasad said that India had helped Sri Lanka to move towards the 13th
Amendment and the Provincial Councils and said he looked forward to
assist in the development programmes launched in the Eastern Province.
Bus skids; one dead, 33 injured

A Civil Defence Force member was killed when a private bus skidded
off the road yesterday morning in Gonagalara, Buttala-Kataragama Road.
Another 33 passengers were injured including five Police Constables and
six Civil Defence Force personnel.
Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said the private bus from
Kataragama to Kurunegala skidded at 18th mile post, Gonagalara area in
Buttala around 7.20am.
Two of the injured Police Constables are in a critical condition. The
injured are being treated at the Sirigala and Buttala Hospitals.
The bus driver and conductor were arrested.
School anniversary
An all night Pirith chanting ceremony and an alms giving for 50
Bhikkus will be held at the Bekkegama Vidyalaya, Panadura on February 19
and 20 to invoke blessings on the founders, principals, teachers, and
soldiers who sacrificed their lives at the battlefield and to bless the
leaders and soldiers in operational areas.
Buddhist talk
Professor Raja de Alwis will deliver a public Buddhist talk in
English on ‘Practice of Walking Meditation’ at a meeting of the Servants
of the Buddha Society on Saturday, February 21st at 4.30 p.m. at the
Maithri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
Annual General Meeting
The 25th Annual General Meeting of the Past Pupils Association of
Ananda Sastralaya Kotte will be held on February 22 at the College Main
Hall commencing 3.00 p.m. All past pupils are cordially welcome.

Awards day
The second batch of teachers who submitted all four modules
successfully completed their Cambridge International Diploma for
Teachers last month will receive their certificates at the Ladies’
College Department of Vocational Studies Annual Awards Day to be held on
March 20.
Public lecture
The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), is organising a
public lecture on “Project Monitoring” for engineering and other
professionals involved in project monitoring.
The lecture which will be delivered by Eng. B.V. Sarath Kumara de
Silva, Chairman of the State Engineering Corporation will be held on
