Aravinda and Gayan the stars at Tissa
Bernard Perera in Tissamaharama
The third annual Carlton Super Sports came to an end with the Super
Cross at the Ceylon Autodrome organised by Tharunyata Hetak Foundation.
A large crowd of over 40,000 Motor Racing fans gathered to witness the
days proceeding here yesterday.
The high light of the day was the three victories achieved by Upulwan
Serasinghe. The most eye catching event on the day was the SL-GT Super
Cars event competed by all leading drivers in the country Aravinda
Premadasa, Dinesh Deheragoda, Reya Farook, Nihal Premaratne and young
Pasindu Peiris.
Infact it was Pasindu Pieris who won the hearts of all spectators
when he overcame the challenges from Aravinda Premadasa and Dinesh
Deheragoda to win the race one. It was the most thrilling race as
Pasindu and Aravinda were involved in a very close battle specially
during the 3rd, 4th and 5th Caps.
But the second race in the same class saw Aravinda take sweet revenge
and beat race one winner Pasindu after going past him in the third lap
and kept on moving swiftly to win the event. Deheragoda was the runner
up and Pasindu had to be satisfied with the second runner up position.
Susantha Gunewardene had a comfortable victory in the Mini Seven
class. He also managed to secure two runner up positions behind Upulwan
Serasinghe Ford Lase 1500 cc category.
The only lady driver to be on the podium was Shehara Jayawardene
driving her Nissan March in the Nissan March class. She was beaten to
second place the experience driver in this class Harsha Panduwawala.
In the motor cycle event it was reigning champion Gayan Sandaruwan
who thrilled all his fans to their maximum with his dare devil riding.
He had to face stiff opposition from the sole foreign competitor
Russel Jarmen the Englishman.
In the 125 cc Racing Class it was Jarmen who got off to a flying
start and was ahead of the other riders. Gayan in fourth place planned
his riding pattern and got his act in to perfection and went past the
Englishman in the fourth lap. From there onwards it was Gayan all the
way till he crossed the finish line to be the great winner.
Gayan Sandaruwan was the clear winner in the open event for Racing
Bikes which also was the final event for the day. It was the winner who
made good start followed by Russel Jarmen the Englishman once again. But
Jarmen could not match Gayan at any stage of the race. Jarmen tried
everything in store to challenge Gayan but failed in all his attempts.
Tuan Ossen took the second runner up position.
Sasindu Peiris was the other rider to excel on this track winning two
events comfortably. First he won the Street Trail Bikes riding a Honda
and later went on to win the open event for Street Trail Bikes. The
second event he had to fight all the way R. M. Safraz and Kamal
Prasanna.
Indika Gurusinghe the experienced rider carried away the Trophy on
offer Super Mortard Open Gravel event. He used all his experience to be
in front from the word go and completed the race with ease.
