Regional business community strikes forward to empower young leaders

The second phase of the "Learn and Lead" regional youth leadership program, designed to identify, engage, and empower the next generation of progressive leaders of Sri Lanka from amongst the young leaders from the regions, was launched recently at the Secretariat for Co-ordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP).

'Learn and Lead' is implemented by Sri Lanka's regional business community, through the Business for Peace Alliance (BPA), Sri Lanka's network of regional business chambers in partnership with SCOPP.

The program launched in January 2008, is steered by a high powered steering committee of eminent persons in the fields of education, development and child psychology. The Committee is chaired by former Under Secretary of the United Nations, Jayantha Danapala Past Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Mahen Dayananda serves as the Vice Chairman.

During the first year 'Learn and Lead', pioneered as an opportunity of granting advanced level education for young leaders from conflict and poverty stricken areas through scholarships to leading private schools in the cities. The students were also provided with a full package of support services including accommodation in school hostels, clothing, support for extra curricular activities, mentoring by guardians, special English classes and leadership development.

The second phase of 'Learn and Lead', while continuing the scholarship scheme, expands to bring in leadership development programs and programs to foster unity amongst children amongst diverse communities within their own districts.

The recent launch of the second phase of 'Learn and Lead' was attended by officials representing the corporate and International Sectors.

Delivering the welcome address, Jayantha Danapala, conveyed his thoughts on the vital role youth has to play within the process of Peace Building and stressed the value of the 'Learn and Lead' program. The progress shown by the first batch of scholars and the way in which they integrated so well into their host schools in the cities bore testimony to the success of the program.

Secretary General of SCOPP, Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha enlightened the audience on how 'Learn and Lead', has contributed not only towards new opportunities for development of young regional leadership, but has also laid a foundation for multi ethnic harmony, paving the way for national stability and peace.

Project Assistant of BPA, Keshiya Leitch, brought to life case studies, of the 'Learn and Lead' scholars explaining their backgrounds, achievements and progress since obtaining the scholarship.

A highlight of the evening was the presentations made by three bright scholars who shared their experience and journey with 'Learn and Lead'. The level of confidence that they displayed and their commitment to go back to serve their regions some day was significant.

Secretary General of the BPA, Manique Mendis discussed the way forward, drawing out opportunities and avenues, where prospective partners could pledge their contributions. Avenues for partnership in this programme, apart from supporting the scholarship package include a gamut of activities in the regions. Namely, Skills Development and Leadership Programs and Workshops. Youth Corps setting out the opportunity for students from Colombo and other cities to mingle along with students from the regions and career guidance and peace building program.

A documentary on an Education and Leadership Workshop organized by the Polonnaruwa District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, courtesy Young Asia Television was screened as an example of programs that could be organised in any of the regions under the 'Learn and Lead' program.

Deputy Secretary General of SCOPP C.S. Poolakasingham commented on the structure, progress and avenues this program could cater to in the future. He made special reference to the potential for building bridges between young leaders between the South and the North through common program.

The evening concluded with an open discussion led by Chairman BPA, Suresh de Mel. Several leading members of the business community who were present voiced their appreciation of the program and pledged their support.
