'Review education structure' - English Teachers' Union
The All Ceylon Union of English Teachers, a unit of Education
International has requested President Mahinda Rajapaksa to appoint
immediately a commission of prominent educationalists to review the
entire education system.
The Union's Secretary-General, M. A. Stanley Perera has pointed out
to the President that the proposed establishment of the Education
Service Commission should be in control of appointments, transfers,
dismissals and connected disciplinary matters of teachers.
The suggested Education Service Commission should consist of eminent
educationalists, trade union officials, legal and ministry officials.
The present system of teacher appointments, transfers, dismissals and
connected disciplinary matters are highly defective and not carried out
properly and as such the education system in Sri Lanka is in jeopardy.
The Union has emphasized to the President that if the above proposal
is implemented it would benefit nearly 200,000 teachers in service.
Copies of this memorandum has been forwarded to Dr. Wiswa Warnapala,
Minister of Higher Education and Susil Premajayantha, Minister of
Education.
