On the 28th of February 2009, the Chart Foundation "Catalyst to
Harness and Advance Rural Talent" along with the Rotary Club of Colombo
West, had a food festival at the car park of the JetWing offices at
Navam Mawatha
The evening's highlight was the award ceremony to recognize the
services of Wilbert Ranasinghe, the English teacher at Kettawella
Kanishta Vidyalaya, who has single handedly taught English at this
school from the primary grades to grade 10 so that all the children
would have a knowledge to read, write and speak English.
The award was handed over to him by Sunimal Fernando, Advisor to the
President. The 'thank you' speech was made by one of the students
Nimesha Somaratne, who in an emotional voice explained how English had
changed her life, and opened the door to many opportunities, towards her
future.
The "Chart Foundation" was formed in August 2008. Its objective is to
empower the rural youth to be part of the Global economy. The foundation
has decided to focus on Kettawella, for its first project in providing
80 laptops to primary grade students and invest in improving English
skills and IT education of the children. |
