Language Day

The Language Day of Greenwood College, Ambatenna will be held today at the School Main Hall commencing from 8.30 a.m. Provincial Education (English) Director Chanaka Sandanayake of Kandy will be the Chief Guest.

The Language Day presentations of the students would be in all three media. This year, for the first time, a presentation in the Japanese Language will be made by the students of the special class of the school. Presentations will comprise speeches, dialogues and dramas and some highlights are ‘London Bridge’ ‘Snow White and Seven Dwarfs’ and ‘Horse Eggs’.


Commemorative talks on T. B. Jayah

The T. B. Jayah Foundation has made arrangements with the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (National Service) to broadcast commemorative talks tomorrow coinciding with the 49th death anniversary of Dr. T. B. Jayah.

Sinhala - at 10.45 a.m. - Trade, Marketing Co-operative and Consumer Services Minister Bandula Gunawardena

English - at 8.00 p.m. - Presidential Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs and Media Ombudsman Alhaj H. M. Azwer

Damsaranee in Eheliyagoda

Damsaranee 2009 organised with the blessings of the Maha Sangha by the Eheliyagoda Traders’ Association together with state and voluntary organisations to mark Poson Poya will be held at Eheliyagoda town on Poson Poya day.

A variety of programs including exposition of relics, Mihindu Perahera, Buddhist dramas, Buddhist devotional songs competitions, Dhamma propagation service Dhamma Desana, illuminations and dansalas will also be held to mark the event.


Doctor on Re-birth

Dr. H.B. Jayasinghe, Consultant Clinical Hypnotist and Family Physician from Kandy will deliver a lecture tomorrow on Re-birth giving the doctor’s views on this topic based on his findings on it through hypnotism.

The talk sponsored by the Sri Lanka Medical Association in association with the Daily News Medical Page Healthwatch will be held at the SLMA auditorium, No. 6, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo.


IPM new-wing opening

A multi-faith religious ceremony will be conducted by the clergy representing Buddhist, Christian, Hindu and Muslim faiths at the Opening of the New Wing of the Institute of Personnel Management (HR House) on today at 5 p.m. at No. 43, Vijaya Kumaranatunga Mawatha, Narahenpita, Colombo 5.

The ceremony will be followed by the inauguration of the new lounge for members of the IPM which will be held tomorrow at 7.30 p.m. under the auspices of IPM President Lalith Wijetunge and Council members. IPM past President and ‘Building Committee’ Chairman U.A.C. Obeysekera will be the chief guest.


O/L English Lit seminar

A seminar on GCE ‘O’Level English literature by Prof. Manique Gunesekera of the English Language Teaching Unit of the

University of Kelaniya will be held today from 10.20 a.m. to noon. This seminar is held as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the university.


Costly tortoise

Pugoda Magistrate M.M.A. Anawaratne fined W. Roshan Ranaweera of Keragala Rs. 10,000 for killing a tortoise. Keragala police post prosecuted.


Four in illegal coral racket

Weligama Police arrested on suspicion, one person while engaged in digging corals in the sea at Talaramba in the Police division of Weligama with three other persons who were transporting corals in a tractor.


Tharunyata Hetak workshops

Two workshops jointly organized by the Tharunyata Hetak organization and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) under their Vocational Training and Guidance Program for youth in Matara will be held tomorrow at the Ratmale Bambarenda Saddharmaraja Maha Vidyalaya from 8.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and at the Devinuwara Divisional Secretariat auditorium from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.


Pirith to bless President

An all night pirith chanting to bless President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Security Forces personnel will be held at the Paradise Court Housing Complex today.

Transport Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Western Provincial Council Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga and several officials will participate.


Exhibition

Photographer Athula Ranaraja will hold his photography exhibition ‘Single Light’ for the second time on May 30 and 31 at the Lionel Wendt. The exhibition showcases 50 photographs both colour and black and white. Ranaraja had his primary education at Galgamuwa Central College and had secondary education at Kingswood college, Kandy.

He followed a three-year diploma course in photography. He is now the Director Development at Sri Lanka National Photographers’ Association. He now works as a professional photographer.

Two die in accident

Two persons were killed and another critically wounded when a van and a lorry collided yesterday morning in Helagala, Warakapola along the Colombo- Kandy road.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said a van and lorry collided face to face at the 50th mile post, Helegala in Warakapola around 6.50 a.m. “Drivers of the van and lorry were killed on the spot,” he added.

The dead were identified as T.M. Gamage (26) of Deniyaya and S.G. Senadira (24) of Mulleriyawa.
